Over $9K Gifted to BOE for Pilot Programs
Manhasset SEPTA Funds Five School Programs for 2009-10

On Thur, Nov 5, the Manhasset Board of Education received over $9,000 from the Manhasset Special Education PTA for pilot programs in the school district this year. The gift will fund five new school programs including three for the elementary schools and two for the secondary school.
“We are so delighted that just two short years after chartering Manhasset SEPTA, we are able to bring four special education support programs and one gifted and talented program to our schools,” Manhasset SEPTA Co-Vice President Helen Weitman stated at the BOE presentation. “Thank you to the BOE and the school principals for welcoming our efforts to fulfill SEPTA’s mission of providing programs and support to our special needs community,” she added.
The gifted funds are a result of Manhasset SEPTA’s school calendar fundraiser this September. The community’s business and residents showed overwhelming support during the fundraiser, with over 700 pocket calendars sold this fall during school open houses and homecoming events.
“We are so grateful to the community for their generosity during our district pocket calendar fundraiser,” stated Manhasset SEPTA Co-President Lori Mann who headed the fundraising effort. “Thank you for allowing SEPTA to bring these programs to the community and to our students!”
The five pilot programs include special education support for homework help in both elementary schools, as well as a mid-term support program for students at the middle school.
Furthermore, a gifted and talented science club will be piloted for the eighth graders that will take place on Saturday mornings. The club will also participate in prestigious science competitions including the 3M Challenge.
Manhasset SEPTA is still accepting donations for school programs in the upcoming school year, and welcomes the community’s financial support. Please contact Manhasset SEPTA via email at ManhassetSEPTA@gmail.com or by mail at Manhasset SEPTA, PO Box 155, Manhasset NY 11030.
