Science Program Kicks Off Pilot Year
Eighth Graders Begin New Program

The Manhasset Middle School’s new gifted and talented science program started off with a bang as twenty eighth graders participated in the first session on Sat, Nov 14. Headed by award-winning Science Research Specialist, Mr. Peter Guastella, the science enrichment program provides a bridge between elementary gifted and talented experiences and the ninth grade introduction to science research course at the High School. The Introductory Science Research Experience program is a collaborate effort with the Manhasset Secondary School and Manhasset Special Education PTA (SEPTA) to support the gifted and talented students in our community. Manhasset SEPTA has provided the funding for the program, which runs into April 2010.
“Thank you to Manhasset SEPTA for their generosity that has enabled this program to happen for our students,” Mr. Peter Guastella stated.
The program taps into Mr. Guastella’s great successes in regional science events and contests to reach out in eighth grade to the school’s gifted and talented students. The Introductory Science Research Experience program is being held on Saturday mornings in the High School’s newly renovated science research laboratory. The program runs for more than 12 weeks and will have students participating in local and regional science competitions including the 3M Challenge in May 2010.
“We are so proud to start our gifted and talented efforts with this wonderful program,” Manhasset SEPTA’s Director of Gifted and Talented Mrs. Kelly Fu said. “Thank you to both Dr. Schlanger and Mr. Guastella for welcoming our support for the gifted students,” she added.
Manhasset SEPTA is still welcoming contributions to help fund this program, and is interested in corporate sponsorship for donations as well. Please contact ManhassetSEPTA@gmail.org for more details, or mail contributions to Manhasset SEPTA at PO Box 155, Manhasset NY 11030.
