Manhasset SEPTA Receives Greentree Grant
$7,500 Awarded to Fund Adaptive Sports Program
On Tue, June 23, the Greentree Good Neighbor Fund awarded Manhasset Special Education PTA (SEPTA) a $7,500 grant to fund the adaptive sports Skills-n-Drills Bootcamp program. This program is offered through the SCA’s Saturday Series, and was piloted last year in both the fall 2008 and winter 2009 sessions.
The Skills-n-Drills Bootcamp program was developed by special education physical therapist and trainer Chris Speziali, who runs PowerPals in Glen Cove, NY. With nearly fifteen years experience with special needs children, Coach Chris has created a fun, competitive-free atmosphere that breaks down the basic skills needed to participate in sports while supporting his students with a small group size and one-on-one ‘big buddies.’ The program includes strength training, dribbling, kicking, catching and throwing skills, a sensory regulation break/station, and a small group ‘sports game’ at the end of each class that helps bring together the different skills learned.
The pilot program was very well received by parents and children alike with both the fall and winter session classes being completely filled. Manhasset SEPTA is now proud to announce that this program is again available for the 2009-10 SCA Saturday Series, headed once again by Coach Chris Speziali. The generous grant from Greentree will subsidizes the added expenses of additional staff and specialized therapist providers, allowing the program is be available at the same low cost of $130 that is charged for all Saturday Series’ classes.
