Answers from Allison Rushforth, Manhasset School District’s Director of Special Education

Q: In a collaborative classroom is my classified child receiving math and reading services as they would if they were in a "pull out" situation?
A: The math and reading services your child is receiving addresses your child’s goals on the IEP. The CSE committee members discuss the most appropriate and least restrictive location for the provisions of services.  If the support of a special education teacher is needed to address your child’s reading and math skills in a classroom, the teacher may push into the classroom as a consultant teacher or as a teacher in an integrated co-teaching model.

Q: How will I know if my child is eligible for special education services?
A: When a parent has questions or concerns regarding their child and how he or she is performing in a particular skill, subject, or throughout the day in school, they should first speak with the classroom teacher. This conversation should be a dialogue of what the parent is seeing at home and how the child is performing in school.  If your child is demonstrating a lack of progress, then the teacher would request that the building’s Instructional Support Team (IST) meet to determine if additional interventions are needed.  The interventions vary from providing additional math, writing, or reading instruction to speech improvement services or services from an occupational or physical therapist.  Progress continues to be monitored and if there is no or minimal progress, the school principal will make a referral to the Committee for Special Education for an evaluation.

Q: What is the District’s schedule for annual reviews?
A: Annual Review meetings will begin in early February.   In the elementary schools we start with grade 6 students first and then move on to grade 5, 4, and so on.  In the middle school, we begin with grade 8 and move on to grade 7.  In the high school, we begin with grade 9 and move on to grade 10 and 11.
